NEW MUSiC: The Pinecones

(source: myspace.com/pinecones)
Considering yesterday’s post about Vancouver’s Yukon Blonde, today’s featured band, Toronto via Halifax’s The Pinecones might have you thinking that there’s a retro-revival going on in the great White North. “Sage”, the title track from the band’s new album, is a psychedelic tambourine-infused pop rocker, that glides along on smooth guitar riffing and a heady rhythmic brew.
Around this time last year, front man Brent Randall released We Were Strangers in Paddington Green under the name Brent Randall & his Pinecones, garnering comparisons to some of the great songwriters of our time (Newman, Nillson, and McCartney). Between then and now Randall picked up stakes and moved to Toronto, put together a new line up (including Brian O’Reilly of Their Majesties and Meligrove Band, Joel Goguen from Laura Peek & The Winning Hearts, and Paul Linklater from Dave Bidini’s Bidiniband), changed the band’s name and recorded a new disc. Along with all this renewal is a new sound, one that trades in the former band’s penchant for orchestrated pop for more experimentation and lo-fi scuzziness. The album was produced by Linklater, and all the band members contributed songs to the 16 track album. Much like Yukon Blonde yesterday, I didn’t think I’d like this track as much as I do, but it’s got an infectious quality to it that makes me curious about what the whole album will sound like. Sage the record is out as of this past Tuesday; “Sage” the song is waiting for you right down here:
