Yukon Blonde: definitely not standing in the dark

(source: killbeatmusic.com)

In these dead cold winter days, when the sky is gray and your soul is sour, music can become your new best friend.  Applying for that position is Vancouver’s Yukon Blonde, and based on their application, their isn’t a better fit for chasing away those blahs out there.

The band has been getting a fair bit of attention lately, with features in the Vancouver Sun, The National Post’s Ampersand and CBC Arts as a band to watch in 2010, but I know you don’t care about all that; “What about the songs, Jimbo?” you’re asking.  Well, sweet gems like “Rather Be With You” recall hazy sunny days in the park where busy lives put on the breaks and good living starts to take over.  “Seasons come/seasons go” sings the chorus, but this track is stuck in summertime all the way through.  Their 60s-inspired pop harmonies and laid back vibe isn’t something that I tend to gravitate to, but they remind me in many ways of The Broken West, who share a similar penchant for great harmonies and hook-filled melodies.  Yukon Blonde aren’t just regurgitating the past; they’re bringing the best aspects of the great psychedelic rock/pop records of the 60s into this century, and they’re doing it with style and confidence.

The band begins a cross-country jaunt in support of their self-titled debut on February 20 (in Calgary), with stops in Edmonton, Regina, Chicago, Windsor, Boston, NYC, Montreal, Ottawa, and Hamilton before ending up in Toronto on March 13 for Canadian Music Week.  Yukon Blonde hit the shops this week.
