NEW MUSiC: Devolver

(Marc Girouard of Deveolver)
They’ve been recording and releasing music since 1997, and somehow have managed to sail under the radar since then, but the spacey pop stylings of Devolver deserve to be heard by a wider audience. Marc Girouard and Kyra Stefanson are Devolver’s main core, and there’s been a different lineup accompanying them with each release. They’ve been releasing music on Vancouver label Transsiberian Music Co., amassing a catalogue of (by my count) four full-lengths and a series of singles in the interim, with a new disc, Christ’s Lane scheduled for release this year. If you’re a fan of the hazy atmospherics of Spacemen 3 and Spiritualized, you’ll get a kick out of this blissed out, fuzzy 12 song disc. Its lo-fi production qualities belies the fact that these are intricate, delicately composed songs that drift in a dreamy haze from one to the the other. None of the 12 trracks lasts longer than four minutes, which is part of its strength: often times, albums of similar sound seem to go on and on forever, losing the listener in the repetitive drones. Devolver make sure that you’re never bored or lost along the way thanks to the quality of the songs themselves. Each is a pretty straight-ahead pop song that’s been given a unique setting, thereby setting each one apart: “Suncreep” is a delicious summery pop treat; “Seems Unkind” a sadly beautiful lament; “Bottom Line” a cinematic album opener.
If you’re unfamiliar with Transsiberian Music Co. or are at all intrigued by the track linked below, check out the label’s site. they have a ton of free MP3s from Devolver and the other artists on their roster. It’s well worth a visit and look around.
