In memoriam: Mark Linkous

Rolling Stone has confirmed that Sparklehorse‘s Mark Linkous took his own life yesterday, March 6.  Details of his death have not yet been revealed, but his family did release a statement saying “It is with great sadness that we share the news that our dear friend and family member, Mark Linkous, took his own life today.  We are thankful for his time with us and will hold him forever in our hearts. May his journey be peaceful, happy and free. There’s a heaven and there’s a star for you.”

In his short, brilliant career, Linkous released four albums under the Sparklehorse name, and was said to be working on new material at the time of his death.  Last year, Linkous partnered up with Danger Mouse and film director David Lynch for Dark Night of the Soul, a collaboration with many other artists that courted publicity for the legal dispute with EMI that surrounded it.  The album was leaked via the internet but didn’t get an official label release (although NME is reporting that it will be out some time this year).

Linkous’ age was not public, however he was said to be in his 40s.

I haven’t really listened to Sparklehorse, but that Dark Night of the Soul album was amazing, “Revenge” in particular
