Lawrence Arabia: Captain of the Commodore

(source: musebox.net)

James Milne has spent time in The Ruby Suns, The Brunettes , The Reduction Agents, and toured as part of Okkervil River, but today we’re talking about his songwriting alter-ego, Lawrence Arabia, and the charismatically catchy “Apple Pie Bed”.  It’s taken from his second album Chant Darling, and first for Bella Union who’ll be releasing it in North America.  Already a hit in his native New Zealand, Milne is bringing his take on the classic pop tune to the home of West Coast melodies and lush harmonies hoping to have a homecoming of sorts.  It’s the kind of song you have to listen to a few times over, so stately and perfect is it in it’s simplicity that you can easily have it soundtrack an entire day.

Lawrence Arabia is touring now with Fanfarlo (he’s in Philly tonight) through mid April, and the disc should be in your favourite record shop now.  Perhaps on Record Store Day (April 17th) you’ll pick this little ditty up based on my recommendation, then send me a lovely written email telling me how much you’re enjoying the record and thanking me for my insight and exquisite taste in music.  Or maybe not.
