The ugly side of SXSW

Via Anthony at  fascinated.fm and thanks to Bryan at herohill.com for pointing me to it.

I don’t know whether to laugh, cry, or blog about it… oh, wait.  Never mind.

Which is worse? Not being considered a real writer, or that someone thought to use “X hits per month” as a valid reason to be let into a bar?

Ha! I make no illusions about ever being considered a real writer, but I would never try to get into a gig based on hits per month. That’s just sad.

I would say, at an event designed on finding great new music and getting that music out to the world, people with the ability to do so have more value as an audience member than those who do not. It might not be fair to a average fan but I bet that a band would rather have a blogger w a lot of visibility at their show than a really nice, well meaning college kid.

According to Anthony this was a “Sign outside Beerland Texas venue on Red River” in Austin.

As a music blogger myself… lighten up folks – that’s funny. I saw that and laughed. And the place struck me as a punk dive, so you would expect that sort of attitude there, which one could either appreciate or not.

It’s funny until the generalization. The analytics call out is pretty sharp :-)

I think it’s very funny. If someone started bragging about Google Analytics impressions/hits, it would piss me off too. My one complaint with SXSW, is the line for the Pitchfork party.
