Party on George Street: Junos 2010

(source: myspace.com/arkellsmusic)
While the country is going to get to watch the gala festivities tonight, last night in St. John’s NL the 2010 Juno Awards presented lovely lady statues for a good number of big and awards, and they went to a few QBiM favourites.
Metric and Joel Plaskett had the alternative album categories all wrapped up: Three earned Plaskett the Adult Alternative album award while Fantasies won Metric the kiddie Alternative album award. A pair of Arts & Crafts artists picked up awards, too: Bell Orchestre won Instrumental Album of the year for As Seen Through Windows, and Charles Spearin‘s The Happiness Project picked up Contemporary Jazz Album of the Year. Both are well deserved, in my opinion. If you haven’t heard Spearin’s disc, you’re doing your ears a disservice. New Group of the Year went to Hamilton’s Arkells (yeah!) and Artist of the Year was bestowed upon one K’naan (surprised?).
That’s a pretty extensive list of winners, so what awards could there possibly be left to give out tonight? Album of the Year, Fan Choice Award, Group of the Year, New Artist of the Year, Rap Recording of the Year, Single of the Year, and the coveted (seriously, folks) Songwriter of the Year. Expect K’naan to have his hands full by the time the night closes.
