Elephant Stone: Welcome back, Strangers.

Though they cheekily call their sound “hindi-rock”, the descriptor fits Elephant Stone like a glove.  Their Jace Lasek produced debut album The Seven Seas brought to mind echoes of The Stone Roses, The Kinks, Sloan and Big Star (how much more “indie” can you get?) alongside their trippy raga vibe.  I lost The Seven Seas amidst the flood of music that came my way since it’s release last year (even though it made the ’09 Polaris Longlist), but Rishi Dhir and his band have come back to remind me just how great their jangle pop is.  The Glass Box EP is a bite-sized version of that debut album, delivering pristine pop songs that weave a psychedelic tapestry of sound.  Book-ended by a pair of instrumentals, the five songs exemplify Dhir’s obsession with the perfect pop song.

The Glass Box EP is available now as a digital download or on beautiful sounding 12″ vinyl.  the band recorded it at Montreal’s Breakglass Studios, using the vintage console that was allegedly used by Led Zeppelin to record Physical Graffiti.  You may recall that this is the same studio The Besnard Lakes used to record …Are The Roaring Night, so I’ll assume that Jace Lasek was involved in the EP’s recording, too.  Elephant Stone will be joining The Besnard Lakes this fall on a North American tour, but for now you can catch them playing with the Brian Jonestown Masacre across the U.S. and Canada before heading to Europe for their first-ever tour there.
