Is this good?

(photo: Vanessa Heins)

For the last week or so, Ive been staring at the comely photo of Hannah Georgas on the cover of Exclaim! and wondering what I make of the young chanteuse and her glistening indie-pop coming out party, This Is Good.  It’s a bold album title, no?  Though it’s her full length debut , Georgas’ previous EP The Beat Stuff has helped her amass a fan base ready to rock her into the stratosphere.  She’s been the featured musician in a North America-wide Wal-Mart commercial that got Taylor Swift tweeting about the song “You’ve Got a Place Called Home”, won a 2009 CBC Radio 3 Bucky Award for Best New Artist, been on a number of TV show  soundtracks, but it all really started when Georgas submitted “the Beat Stuff” to the 2008 Music BC Songbird West Singer/Songwriter Competition and won.  Before that, Georgas flirted with the idea of becoming a serious musician, throwing caution to the wind and trying her hand at making a living doing what she knew in her heart she really wanted to do.

The more I listen to This Is Good, the more I tend to agree with the disc’s title.  She’s been alternately compare to Emily Haines (for tone, content, and sex appeal), and Feist (for mass-appeal-ability), but Georgas’ (and all her female contemporaries) shouldn’t be reduced to a gender-based category for easy classification.  She’s equally comfortable flirting with the poppier side of her music (see “Bang Bang You’re Dead”) and more classically influenced moments (see “Thick Skin”), displaying solid songwriting chops all the way through.  Fans of QBiM, I think you’re going to love Hannah Georgas, because she really is that good.
