NEW MUSiC: Jenny Omnichord

(photo: Owen Cherry)

When I was in elementary school, my Gr. 2 teacher, Miss Bradnam could sing and play any kind of string instrument you could think of, but what really stands out in my memory is watching her play the omnichord.  I had no idea what it was, but to me it looked liked the future, and sounded like nothing on earth.  Now, all these years later, it’s odd that something I once associated with the future now induces nostalgia. For, as soon as I started listening to All Our Little Bones, the new record from Jenny Omnichord, the first thing I started thinking about was my Gr. 2 music classes with Miss B. and the sounds those memories make in my head.

While All Our Litle Bones is her third release, this is my introduction to Jenny Omnichord (aka Jenny Mitchell).  She’s joined by a number of guests to round out the full-band sound (with the omnichord taking a bit of a backseat from previous releases) on these songs of babies born and soon-to-be-born, life and death and all the waiting that happens in between.  All Our Little Bones is the first release for new imprint Label Fantastic! (started by Mitchell and her friends Wax Mannequin, Mathias Kom (of the Burning Hell) and Gillian Manford.  The Label Fantastic! team is certainly mapping out their place in the Canadian music scene with their initial pressing.  All Our Little Bones‘ packaging folds out into a deluxe, cross-country board game, played on a hand-quilted map of Canada with colourful little car pieces (included).  Now that makes me nostalgic for another piece of Canadiana: the Oh! Canada board game issued by the Commissioner of Official Languages back around ’79 (check out this link to my alma mater’s Museum of Games for a look at it).

All Our Little Bones is available today, and Jenny Omnichord will be out and about, playing at home in Guelph tonight (The Ebar), and then out to Ottawa for a show on Saturday before heading to my neck of the woods next Friday for a show at St. Catharines’ Strega Café.  More tour dates are available by going to her label page.
