CONTEST: It’s nice to Michou

(photo: Matt Barnes)
In yesterday’s post about the S.C.E.N.E. Music Festival I mentioned that a lot of the artists on the bill wouldn’t normally make their way onto my everyday playlist, but that’s not to say that there wasn’t anything there for an indie-geek like me to enjoy. Case in point: Windsor, Ontario’s Michou. Their sparse Wikipedia entry calls them “a folk rock band” but I beg to differ. Acoustic instruments, yes; pleasant melodies, sure; but if this is folk rock, then Woody Guthrie is Owl City. Lead vocalist Mike Hargreaves could be a vocal dead ringer for Death Cab For Cutie’s Ben Gibbard, and some of the songs on their second album Cardona (like “Still Wandering”) actually remind me of DCFC’s quieter, acoustic moments.
While I initially thought of them as being radio-friendly unit shifters, I’ve come to realize there’s a something deeper going on beneath the sunny surface. I could certainly imagine the band being tailed by a cackle of pre-pubescent girls through the caverns of a sports arena in the near future, but you don’t have to be under 20 to join in the party. They’ll be opening for The Weakerthans in Waterloo on August 8, after playing at this year’s Hillside Festival in Guelph on the weekend of July 23-25.
CONTEST DETAILS: I have 2 copies of Michou’s Cardona CD to give to diligent QBiM readers who email CONTESTS [AT] QUICKEBFOREITMELTS [DOT] COM with “It’s Nice to Michou!” in the subject line and your mailing address in the email body. Contest will close on Saturday, July 3, 11;59 p.m.
