Breakneck speed

To appropriate one of Ferris Bueller’s famous quotes, music moves pretty fast, If you don’t stop and listen closely once in a while, you could miss it. It’s been a busy couple of months on the new release front, with records being fired out in rapid succession. It would be easy to miss a disc or two (or three or four) if you weren’t paying close attention, which is what I almost did with Tokyo Police Club‘s sophomore LP, Champ. Truthfully, I’d almost forgotten about the band itself, had “Wait Up (Boots of Danger)” not been on the CBC Radio 3 R30 countdown these last few weeks (it’s currently sitting pretty at No. 1). It’s been awhile since they made a splash on the international scene back in ’06, and their debut Elephant Shell dropped in ’08, but that’s practically an eternity in internet years.
The time away hasn’t done anything to diminish their appeal, though. Tokyo Police Club are adept at making easily accessible, smart-guy pop that doesn’t pander to the lowest common denominator. They got some flack for being a bit too serious and mature on Elephant Shell, but Champ has a sense of fun about it that sets it up as being a great summer weekend soundtrack. It’s not a great leap forwards from its predecessor, but why should Tokyo Police Club mess with a winning formula just for the sake of messing?
Champ is available now on Dine Alone Records, and are part of the label’s annual Summer Sampler Album. You can get point yourself here to get the free download of the album and make your own cover art for it while you’re at it. Tokyo Police Club are also collecting donations for the ASPCA at their official site. In exchange, you’ll get the video for “Wait Up (Boots of Danger)” along with a pair of remixes of the song.
