Contest: Kathryn Calder Are You My Mother? CD

You’re either living under a rock or a Justin Bieber fan if you don’t know that this Tuesday is a pretty big new release date. I get to feeling sorry for artists who inadvertently share their release date with a much anticipated record, the attention that could be directed at them diverted, but Kathryn Calder shouldn’t have any fears that her solo debut Are You My Mother? won’t find an audience on Tuesday.
Recorded at her mother’s house in Victoria BC, Are you my Mother? is a deeply personal album, as personal as reading Calder’s diary. For two years, she cared for her terminally ill mother, and the songs were birthed from that period. She’s stressed that Are You My mother? is not a eulogy, but rather a knowing acknowledgment that life doesn’t come with on owner’s manual, and we shouldn’t anticipate or the road ahead. When you hear a song like “Castor and Pollux” blare from your speakers, you’d hardly associate it with an album about the fragility of life, but that’s the great thing about the disc: its not mired in a single mood. There’s balance: songs like the elegant piano led ballad “Arrow” (available below) acts as a counterpoint to some of the more spirited moments (like the hand-clapping “If You Only Knew”).
Thanks to the good folks at Killbeat Music, I have a copy of Are You My Mother? for one QBiM reader who emails me at CONTESTS [at] QUICKBEFOREITMELTS [dot] COM with “Give me Kathryn Calder” in the subject line and your name and mailing address in the body by 11:59 pm Tuesday, August 3.
Are You My Mother? is out on File Under: Music Records August 3, 2010.
