Luke Doucet and “The Ballad of Ian Curtis”

There’s been no official promo info coming across my desk from Six Shooter Records, but word on the street is that Luke Doucet has a new disc on the way in August.  Steel City Trawler is supposed to drop on August 27 to be exact, and it will feature “The Ballad of Ian Curtis”, Doucet’s superb tribute to the late Joy Division singer.  There’s a lot of Joy Division/New Order musical motifs on the song–Stephen Morris’ steady and powerful drumming, Bernard Sumner’s tinny guitars and Peter Hook’s signature bass line–but throughout Doucet manages to stamp his own personality all over it If you’re a fan of Joy Division and New Order, or of Luke Doucet, or–like me–of both, then you’ll be paying this one over and over again.

This is an album I didn’t even know I was anticipating, but his follow-up to 2008′s QBiM Year-end favourite Blood’s Too Rich has just shot to the top of my list of records to hear in the next month.  Way to start the weekend off right.
