Pop as fuck!

Please pardon the expletive-laced post title, but there’s really no better way to describe Regina’s Library Voices then to use the slogan they themselves emblazoned on t-shirts and the banner of their official web site. “When we started, pop was totally a four-letter word, even though it’s really three letters,” keyboardist/lyricist Michael Dawson told NOW Magazine last month. “At some point we decided if we’re going to make pop music, we might as well do it unabashedly. So we had some T-shirts printed up that said ‘Pop As Fuck!’ and we just went for it.”
The band’s enthusiasm and lust for life has served them well. Faced with calamities that would have crumbled a less-hearty group, Library Voices have pushed on and persevered. In February of 2009 their tour van and most of their gear was stolen. Then, just to top it all off, their basement studio in the Regina Cultural Exchange was pretty well destroyed by a flood, ruining most of the equipment they had left. Luckily, the flood happened a few weeks after Library Voices released Denim On Denim, their full-length debut on Young Soul Records. In the aftermath of the flood, fellow prairie rockers The Weakerthans held a benefit concert to help raise money to replace the damaged gear and get the band back on their feet. That’s when the band faced their second flood of the year: instead of water, it was love and support. Donations from fans across the country started to pour in, and not being the kind of folks to take something without giving anything in return, the band covered The Beatles’ “Help!” and offered it up as their sincere thank you to all who supported them.
Library Voices are playing their home province this week, as part of the Ness Creek Music Festival in Big River, SK on Thursday and Friday, before heading to the Calgary Folk Festival on July 22. They’ll be in Toronto at Harbourfront Centre on July 25 at 4:30 for the outrageous price of nothing.
Denim On Denim is available now on Young Soul Records.
