The amazing sounds of Selway
Like his namesake Phil Collins, Philip Selway is taking his turn stepping out from behind the drum kit and releasing his first solo album, Familial in late August. I’m guessing the decision to go with the formal and full version of his first name is to distance himself from the Genesis drummer and avoid stupid and banal comparisons like mine, but it’ll only take a single listen to the track “By Some Miracle” to realize these two Phil’s have nothing in common.
“By Some Miracle” is the only taste we have of what Familial will sound like so far, far removed from the more adventurous sounds he and Radiohead have been building. Selway is also going to be taking his show on the road around the time the record comes out, but most dates appear to be in the UK and Europe for now, so who knows if he’ll be crossing the pond. I’ll wait until I hear more of the record before making any kind of pronouncements about it, but “By Some Miracle” is a curious little track that has me interetsed in hearing more:

Also of note: Looking for something to do on October 1 through 3? There’s always Vegas, baby, where you can catch Matador Records’ 21st Birthday bash featuring Pavement, Sonic Youth, Belle & Sebastian, the 93-96 line-up of Guided By Voices, along with Spoon, The New Pornographers, Fucked Up, and Ted Leo & the Pharmacisits. More names are going to be added on Monday.
