The return of Land Of Talk

As a purveyor of Canadian music of note, I can’t always like every album/band/song that comes along just because of the artist’s citizenship, right?  I feel bad when an artist that’s getting lots of hype and attention and I just don’t click.  It happens–a LOT–and you don’t get to hear about it on Quick Before It Melts because I really don’t want to spend a lot of time telling you about a band who just didn’t do it for me.  That explains why, back in October 2008, I mentioned the soon-to-be-released Some Are Lakes from Montreal’s Land Of Talk, but then never brought their name up in these pages again: No click.

At the risk of sounding like a broken record two years on, I’m going to give it another go, except this time, I’ve had a chance to preview Cloak and Cipher, the new Land of Talk record scheduled to drop on Secret City August 24.  By the time that release date rolls around, I’m sure I’ll have a full on QBiM SPiNS album review for you, but for now, you’ll just have to trust me:  this clicks.  I’m loving Cloak and Cipher so much that I’ll be heading back to that last album and giving it another go, hoping that maybe I was too harsh or too quick to dismiss.  The new record was recoded at Breakglass Studios (the hottest studio in the country right now if you ask me) with Mr. Lace Jasek of The Besnard Lakes sitting behind the desk.  No surprise then that Land of Talk are going to be setting out with The Besnard Lakes in early fall to tour the disc across North America.  Special tour and Cloak and Cipher album pre-order ticket bundles are available as of today at the Land Of Talk site for these Canadian dates:

September 16 – Toronto, ON (Lee’s Palace)
September 29 – Edmonton, AB (Starlite Room)
September 30 – Calgary, AB (Dicken’s Pub)
October 2 – Victoria, BC (Lucky Bar)
October 3 – Vancouver, BC (Biltmore Cabaret)
the above are all dates with Besnard Lakes
November 18 – Montréal, PQ  (TBA)

So confident am I that this album will be a big deal in a month’s time that I’m willing to write a post without nary a link to MP3 or Stream of any new material.  Let’s just consider this your fair warning that Land Of Talk are going to give us all something to talk about really soon.  Below are links to some of the band’s videos, as well as the requisite Myspace and Facebook links.  Those looking for more Land Of Talk can check out this recent CBC Radio 3 Sessions Podcast of the band live in Montreal.
