This charming man

Meet Twin Shadow, your new favourite retro-indie buzz band

I was introduced to Twin Shadow through Grizzly Bear‘s Facebook feed earlier this week, and was immediately smitten by the Smiths-influenced “Black Magic”.  I had to do a little digging around to find out that Twin Shadow is basically the brainchild of one George Lewis Jr., who seems to be the only member to appear in video or photo form, leading me to believe this is a one-man operation (if there are others, their certainly hidden in the–err–shadows, if you will).  The band has been signed to Grizzly Bear multi-instrumentalist Chris Taylor’s Terrible Records, who will release Twin Shadow’s debut on September 28.  At this point, I don’t know if said debut is a single, and EP or a full album, but I’ll be keeping my eye out for it.

I know what you’re thinking: another New York, 80s-influenced band that’s more novelty than substance.  I’ll be the first to admit that, after the initial flush of fawning, some of these bands fail to live up to the hype.  I have a feeling Twin Shadow is going to be different.  Yes, they sounds like The Smiths and Joy Division, but so did The Dears; that’s not a bad current comparison in my books.  And we all know well enough in 2010 not to lump a band in with their local contemporaries, thereby dismissing them as individuals, right?  We don’t do that anymore, right?  Hello?

Brooklyn Vegan provided a link to the track below a few days ago, and I’ve also embedded the video for “Black Magic” which is labeled NSFW, but–well, I think that may be taking things a bit too far.
