Initial exposure to Suuns

QBiM introduces you to Montreal's Suuns

The four members of Montreal’s Suuns vocalist/guitarist Ben Shemie, guitarist/bassist Joe Yarmush, drummer Liam O’Neill and bassist/keyboardist Max Henry–play music as if they were all tethered to each other by cables, balancing precariously above a huge chasm.  If one were to upset the balance of the music, then all would tumble and fall into the gaping hole below them.  The beats are spare, and the tunes is tense of their Zeroes EP, but the playing is passionate, sometimes rocking into overdrive like on “Mudslingers” all-or-nothing organ-led onslaught.

The Jace Lasek-produced EP (surprise!) is available free from the good folks at Secretly Canadian, who’ll be releasing Sunns’  debut full length on October 12 (it’s called Zeroes QC).  Prior to the album’s release, they’ll be hitting the road with The Besnard Lakes and Land of Talk, starting with a show at Lee’s Palace with Land of Talk on September 16.  I’m sure it won’t be long after that tour ends when we’ll be seeing them hit the Canadian road as headliners themselves.  I’ve been reading up on the band, often compared to Joy Division and Can because of their minimalist, cold sound, but something tells me that when these four guys are on a stage together in front of a rapturous crowd, the temperature rises a good 10 degrees, as bodies beg pulse and sweat to the beat.  After all, it’s extremely hot on Suuns’ surface, no?
