Let spirits ride

Black Mountain release second single from Wilderness Heart LP

The other day I got the latest edition of Under The Radar magazine, and as usual I flipped through the whole thing quickly to get to the reviews section.  I read the reviews first in all my magazines; I’m not sure why, but it’s like a force of habit now.  I know it’s difficult for a magazine like this one doesn’t publish monthly to make sure that its content is relevant over the shelf life of any particular issue.  This issue is going to be sitting on shelves until November, so getting the jump on some album reviews that are still a ways off is understandable, but maybe I need to rethink my “read reviews first” policy in light of this fact.

What I’m getting at here is that Black Mountain‘s Wilderness Heart was given the once over, and failed to garner more than 5 out of 10 stars.  Now, I’m not the world’s biggest Black Mountain fan, but I really like “Old Fangs” the first song they released from the record, so I was actually looking forward to hearing this disc (which hits stores on September 14).  I respect the magazine, and love their features, but sometimes I read their reviews and think to myself, “Who wrote this?  Did you even listen to the record?”  I’m not a great writer, and definitely not a good critic, but sometimes I think I could do a better job than some of these people.  I’ll take a paycheck any day for writing about music if I can do a half-assed job, too.

Anyway, long story short:  I just downloaded “The Hair Song”, the second single off Wilderness Heart and I love it even more than “Old Fangs”.  I was never a fan of Zeppelin style 70s heavy blues, but what Black Mountain are doing is right up my alley.  You have to take everything you read with a grain of salt, right?  Well pour the sodium on, crank of the volume, and bang your head all weekend to these grooves.

hmm, I loved it too. That’s what’s great about music though, you can never tell what kind of an impact a song/album may have on different individuals. Does make it kind of hard on the reviewers though…
