Let’s hear that string part again

Long time no Sufjan Stevens.  It feels like forever since he released his sparkling Illinois LP, and while we may be waiting awhile for the third installment of his supposed 50 States/50 Records project, fans only have to wait a few months to see Stevens back on the road.  He’s heading out on a tour that will see him stop at some of North America’s most venerable and elegant music halls, and he’s starting it all in Canada.

The first show will be at Montreal’s Metropolis Theatre on October 12, followed by a stop at Toronto’s Massey Hall the next night.  He’ll be at Vancouver’s Orpheum Theater on October 28, before wrapping the whole endeavor up with two nights at NYC’s Beacon Theater on November 14 and 15.  Full tour dteails are available here.  According to the press release, “the performances will feature fully realized versions of the songs initially debuted during a late 2009 tour of small clubs in which Stevens workshopped several works-in-progress.”  No chance to hear “Come On! Feel The Illinoise!” then, eh?

While we’re on the subject of Asthmatic Kitty Recording artists, the label released their summer digital sampler this week, which can be streamed and/or downloaded from this handy bandcamp site.

Paper Bag Records is getting set to release All Red, the new album from Montreal’s Winter Gloves on September 7.  Their sophomore disc is preceded by first single, “Plastic Slides” which just got the remix treatment from Teen Daze.

Blonde Redhead are also releasing new music in September.  Penny Sparkle is their fourth disc, and the follow-up to 2007′s 23, a record that got them a whole lot of notice as purveyors of dreamy, hazy indie guitar rock.  Here’s hoping to more of the same.

Congratulations to all the artists recently nominated for the 2010 Western Canadian Music Awards.  They’ll be handed out in Kelowna during BreakOut West 2010 on Sunday October 24th, and will be televised in English on CBC and in French on Radio Canada.  Our boy Dan Mangan has snagged himself a few nods, in the categories Independent Album of the Year, Roots Solo Recording of the Year, and Songwriter of the Year.  You Say Party picked up a nod for Rock Recording of the Year for XXXX, as did Said the Whale (Islands Disappear), The Weakerthans (Live at the Burton Cummings Theatre), and Yukon Blonde (Yukon Blonde).

Mangan’s album Nice, Nice, Very Nice has just been released in the U.S. Spinner.ca is offering “Road Regrets” as a free download.  He’s up for the Polaris Music Prize this year–don’t know if you heard about that yet.

It’s been years since I was last interested in comic books and the like, but all this talk about Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World has got me thinking of going back to my graphic novel days of yore and getting behind the spirit of Twitter’s latest cool trending topic.  Chromewaves has a comprehensive catalogue of Pilgrim related links to check out, and Herohill points us in the direction of a tribute disc to Plumtree, the East coast band who inspired the whole phenomenon.  Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World opened this past Friday.  If you’ve seen it and have read down this far, leave your review of the film in the comments below.  If you haven’t seen them, check out the interactive trailer and the regular trailers in which Michael Cera rocks a Plumtree t-shirt throughout.
