Twin peeks

Remember last month when I posted about the new Land of Talk album and said “So confident am I that this album will be a big deal in a month’s time that I’m willing to write a post without nary a link to MP3 or Stream of any new material”? I’m still confident Cloak and Cipher (coming out August 24) is going to get a lot of buzz, and finally I can offer up some music from the disc and prove to you that I’m right.
Saddle Creek has made a pair of tracks from the disc available in exchange for your email address and a spot on their mailing list. “Swift Coin” is a spirited rocker that sounds like a funkier, groovier Metric. I may get some flack for the comparison but it’s an honest one. The main difference is that “Swift Coin” isn’t a stadium filling anthem; it’s got a sweet and tender bounce to it. Come to think of it, it’s reminding me an awful lot of The Primitives (hands up if you’re old enough to remember them). “Quarry Hymns” is a bit gentler, and highlights Elizabeth Powell’s beautiful voice. I love the harmonies throughout “Quarry Hymns” because as they wash over me, they soothe away any the day, and cradle me gently in their embrace. After the day I’ve had, I need that kind of pampering.
