…For All My Friends In Fall

(photo: Sarahana Shrethsa)
Are you planning on heading down to The Dakota Tavern on Friday night to catch Daniel, Fred & Julie? You should because a) a live performance by Daniel, Fred & Julie isn’t always easy to come by, and b) you’ll have the opportunity to catch opening band The Loom and get on the buzz bandwagon before any one else does.
Okay, that’s not completely true, since the band have already been featured by Paste Magazine (R.I.P.), on Brooklyn Vegan, Tiny Mix Tapes, Muzzle of Bees, and this thing called The New Yorker. The latter, in reference to The Loom’s January show at NYC’s Mercury Lounge with QBiM faves The Rural Alberta Advantage, stated that “the beloved Brooklyn sextet” has been “guiding their chamber-folk sound to decidedly louder sonic territory” and that’s as apt a description as I could come up with. It’s electric-folk, with the amps turned up , the intensity palatable. The horns are sometimes haunting, sometimes menacing (as on “The Middle Distance”); the feedback and drone sometimes mesmerizing, sometimes hypnotic. but The Loom are always compelling and curious, and I found myself wondering “what’s the next song going to sound like?”in the quiet gaps between tracks on their debut LP Teeth. It’s not too often an album generates that much anticipation and interest on an initial listen for me.
The Loom have something very much in common with The RAA: both bands have independently recorded and produced a debut LP that deserves a wider audience, and is just begging for a label to snap it up and distribute it. In the case of The RAA that happened, and I’m sure that the same is going to happen for The Loom. Teeth is not yet out officially, but I’m very thankful that John Fanning (vocals multi-instrumentalist) sent a copy to me to help spread the word about Friday’s show. Unfortunately, I won’t be able to attend, but consider this your fair warning: Friday night, The Dakota Tavern for The Loom: this is must-hear music.
