Meet The Mark Inside

(photo: Joe Fuda)
Toronto’s The Mark Inside list a whole slew of influences in the left-hand column of their Myspace page: The Stooges, Talking Heads, The MC5, The Replacements, PiL, Yo La Tengo and Eric’s Trip is just a starting point. When you look at the whole list and compare it to the band’s sound, there’s obvious connecting points. The Mark Inside know how to make great dirty, scuzzy garage blues that rock that’s a direct descendent of the genre’s best talent. But what elevates them from being a second-tier suburban bar covers band is that the traditional elements of garage rock and psychedelia melt together with the contemporary influences on their list so that you can’t just categorize the band based on hearing one song, nor can you pigeon hole them just because they say The Band and CCR are influences, because they also site Joy Division and Do Make Say Think.
Regardless of all that, The Mark Inside are passionate, voracious players. They attack their songs and rip them to shreds right before your ears. You’ll soon get a better sense of what they’re all about as The Mark Inside prepare to release a six-song vinyl and digital EP called False Flag on October 26. It was produced by Jim Abbiss (whose previous work includes Arctic Monkeys and Kasabian) at Chapel Studios in Lincolnshire, England. The songs will all be on their next full length, scheduled for release early next year. The track listing for False Flag is:
Side A:
There is Nothing to Admit
House of Cards
Lime Green Monkeys
Side B:
Questions
Can’t Take Her With You (When it’s Over)
Shots from a Broken Bottle
And you get a chance to hear the the infectious groove thing that is “House of Cards” right here, right now:
