Dancing with the mentally ill

(photo:Kjell B Persson)
Yesterday I focused some attention on my recent infatuation with noisy, dissonant pop records, but it wasn’t too long ago that QBiM seemed to be all about sugary sweet Swedish pop sounds . It’s been too long since we had some Swedish pop presents to give away so for a change of pace and tone, I’d like to look at the latest from Club 8. My first lessons in Swedish pop came from Matt Skatterbrain, and he’s still the go-to-guy for all things twee and pop. he pointed me in the direction of Labrador Records, where Club 8 live alongside QBiM perennial favourite Pelle Carlberg. Club 8 released The People’s Record in May of this year, featuring the heavy influence of African rhythms alongside the Swedish pop sensibilities. Club 8 are releasing a new non-album single next month, “Closer Now”, that furthers the genre-splicing from their last record. You can sample it for yourself below, along with The People’s Record opener “Western Hospitality”.
