It takes an ocean not to break
It’s getting to be that time of year again, when bloggers like me start to look back on the year and assess which releases will be crowned the standout records of 2010. I’ve been heading back into the archives of the past 12 months, reviewing and reassessing, and the one album I’ve been spending a lot of time with is High Violet, The National‘s follow-up to Boxer which topped my list in 2008. One of my big regrets of the year is that I missed them opening for Rufus wainwright at this year’s Rockin’ the Knox at the Albright Knox Art Gallery in Buffalo. From all accounts, The National’s live show in support of High Violet has been an energetic, hyper-charged event, and the clips featured in a new video for the alternate version of “Terrible Love” made available on the recently expanded version of High Violet is evidence enough.
I don’t know for certain whether or not it will make the cut for my favourite albums of the year post, but this new video, directed by Matt Berringer’s brother Tom, is certainly one of my favourite clips of the year so far. It features behind-the-scenes footage of The National’s European festival stops and their performance at a Madison, WI rally for President Obama:
