Lucky day
There are people I’ve met who just seemed to live a charmed life. You know the kind I’m talking about. Things just seem to fall into their lap with little effort on their part. They get the great job, meet the perfect partner, find an amazing house, have cute babies or buy a wicked car, smile with their perfect teeth as they fold their sculpted arms during a conversation with you as you think, “Man, I wish I was this guy,” and he thinks, “I love myself.”
It’s said these kind of people are born with horseshoes tucked into bodily cavities, as if they’ve been genetically predisposed to this kind of charmed life, but deep down you know that’s just not true. You’re not born lucky, nor can you been bestowed luck by your name. Case in point: meet Zacahary Lucky, a folk/roots artist based in Saskatchewan whose latest record (released in August of this year) Come and Gone appears to flow fully formed and without effort from his voice and gentle guitar strum. The nine songs are adorned with nothing more than acoustic, electric and slide guitar, banjo, harmonica, and percussion (all played by Lucky), and violin and cello (provided by Indiana Avent and Lisa Nazarenko respectively), all connected by Lucky’s soulful singing voice. I tell you, if I had an iota of musical talent, this is the kind of stuff I wish I could play and write.
I’m not going to get all stupid and say something like “Zachary Lucky made his own luck” because that sounds stupid and just goes without saying. Over the course of three previous (correct me if I’m wrong about that, Zach) and countless gigs, he’s refined and practiced his craft. A visit to his Myspace page shows you that the man is playing non-stop from now until April 2011 when he heads to Australia for the Apollo Bay Music Festival. I have a feeling that before he makes that trip, he’ll be appearing on these pages quite a few more times.
Come and Gone is available for purchase right now on iTunes and on Lucky’s Bandcamp page. Friends of QBiM in Saskatoon can catch him on the 20th of this month at Caffe Sola Backroom. On the 21st he’ll be in Steinbach, MB at the Oakridge Garden Store and cafe; 22nd find him at The Station in Altona, MB; the 23rd at The Bunker in Winkler, MB, and on the 24th he’s playing a Potluck House concert in Winnipeg. He’s billing this as a Small Towns Tour, so if you’re in these areas be sure to head out and catch one of Canada’s next big things. Yeah, I just said that.
