Aloha supreme

I like lists. Any kind of list is fine with me, but the best ones set themselves parameters of control, like “The top 10 Places to get Falafels in Brooklyn” or “9 Reasons to Believe Every Word Oprah Winfrey Says”. Shit, I spend the entire year working up to a post that is essentially an alphabetical list of the 10 records I love the most that year (which I’ve already begun to methodically plot out by the way); when I think of December I don’t think “Christmas!”, I think “Year-End lists!”. So the other day when I was surfing around Christine Bougie‘s web site and found her ’20 things About Me’ list, I thought, “perhaps I’ve stumbled upon another kindred spirit”. So as by way of an introduction, let me list six things you need to know about Christine Bougie:
1. She’s a guitarist whose played with the likes of Sylvia Tyson, Roxanne Potvin, Jenny Whiteley, Serena Ryder, Elizabeth Shepherd, Valery Gore and is Amy “Stars” Millan’s go-to girl when she needs some lap-steel loveliness.
2. QBiM loyalists got to hear some of Bougie’s handiwork earlier this year on the self-titled debut album from Colleen and Paul.
3. has released two CDs of her own instrumental compositions, with a third, Aloha Supreme, set to be officially released on November 21st.
4. Her musical obsessions have been Led Zeppelin, Elvis Presley, The Beatles, Kiss, and Joni Mitchell, whose Shadows & Light album Bougie describes as “pivotal”.
5. She’s a Niagara girl, just like me (except that I’m a boy): She grew up in St. Catharines, Ontario, and now calls Toronto home.
6. You can download the song “Me Her” from Aloha Supreme either right here, or over at her Bandcamp site, but it’s imperative you do. While this isn’t the kind of music you’d typically find on a QBiM post, her unique sound and playful arrangements will win you over just as they have me.
