Where is our summer?

Vancouver's Rec Centre answers the question on the Long Weekend! EP

This past weekend, as the clocks fell back an hour, I took advantage of the time change and took a little adventure of my own (which is a story for another time), which left me fuzzy of tongue, foggy of brain, and fragile of psyche on Sunday morning (which was really Sunday afternoon by the time I woke up).  Trying to blog in that condition was next to impossible.  Still I was determined to try and come up with something for this week, and that’s when I decided to put Rec Centre‘s Long Weekend! EP on.  After all, I had had a very long weekend of my own, so I thought maybe this Vancouver band would offer something to shake the cobwebs from my head.

“Shoegaze surf rock” was about all I managed to type before I got lost in Rec Centre’s lo-fi powerpop sonic assault.  At moments it brings to mind hazy, humid summer days that seem to gone on for eternity, and then it’s the soundtrack to slow dancing in a dirty, sweaty bar with your summer sweetie.

But it wasn’t until I watched the video the band has posted for “Funner” on YouTube that I was really able to come around from my foggy stupor and and get into the summer spirit of the record.

Jaws, Fonzie jumping the shark, bikini-clad go-go girls, blood in the water, and fat guys in Speedos: does it get any more summer than that?

Long Weekend! is available as a free download from Rec Centre’s Bandcamp page as we speak.
