Mediumship

When I started to do a little digging on Montreal’s No Joy, I discovered that their name comes from a U.S. military term that means “I have no information”, so I guess you could say that I had no joy on No Joy. But it also could mean “I have been unsuccessful”, so you might also say that No Joy have avoided no joy in the trajectory their career has taken. No Joy was formed just about a year ago via a long distance friendship between Laura Lloyd (in Montreal) and Jasamine White-Gluz (who had decamped to Los Angeles), who emailed music back and forth to each other. The results are available for all to hear on a seven inch released late in 2009 (produced by Graham Van Pelt of Miracle Fortress and Think About Life) and the more recently released Ghost Blonde LP (mixed by Ravonette Sune Rose Wagner).
No Joy may get lumped into the shoegaze category because of their predilection for fuzzy, feedback guitars and gossamer vocals buried deep in the mix, but that’s just too easy and convenient a categorization for their sound. There’s just as much melody as mayhem on tracks like “Hawaii” and “Heedless”, and enough psychedelic swirling sounds (see the album’s title track) to make Ghost Blonde a real heady trip. “Indigo Child” is the kind of song your mind will get lost in, happy to wander around its lush sonic gardens, never once worrying if you’ll ever find the way out.
