Salon style

It’s not too early to be thinking of Spring, and the albums that will make the cut for the Polaris Music Prize longlist for 2011. There have been a handful of records that have made a lasting impression since last June, and in the next few months there will be a deluge of more. In preparation for the upcoming vote, the Polaris folks have come up with an ingenious way of getting like minded music aficionados together to talk about and listen to some potential nominees.
The first Polaris Record Salon event is happening on February 15 at Toronto’s Drake Hotel, and jurist Jonathan Dekel will be showcasing The Dears‘ Degeneration Street (which gets its official release that day). The doors open at 7pm, and Murray Lightburn and Natalia Yanchak of The Dears will be on deck for a live interview at 8pm, followed immediately by an uninterpreted listen to Degeneration Street. I’ll be posting my own review of the album a bit closer to release day, but I can already say that this is quickly becoming one of my favourite records of the year.
