The inevitable end of love

an introduction to Spring Breakup's cruel-to-be-cruel view of love

Spring Breakup is the odd musical coupling of Yukon songwriter Kim Barlow and Newfoundlander Mathias Kom of The Burning Hell. Barlow and Kom’s ukulele and banjo songs overflow with imagination, bouncing back and forth between misery and merriment, as evidenced on “It’s Not Me, It’s You” from their sophomore LP It’s Not You, It’s Me (released on February 1 on Label Fantastic!).

If you’re a cynical old kook like me, then you’re going to get a lot of mileage out of Spring Breakup’s pessimistic view of love and relationships. If you’re a romantic and sentimentalist like all those people in the world I can’t stand, this album may induce a state of depression, which, fueled by alcohol, becomes ever increasingly permanent, thereby transforming you into a cynical old kook like me, in which case you’re going to get a lot of mileage out of Spring Breakup’s pessimistic view of love and relationships.  It’s win/win, really.
