Cannons

Last month I introduced you to Laurel Sprengelmeyer, who goes by the stage name Little Scream , and the beautiful song “Heron and the Fox”. The Golden Record, Little Scream’s debut album was released digitally yesterday (the physical version still comes out on April 12on Outside Music), and she’s also made a new track available for your listening enjoyment.
“Cannons” completely caught be by surprise; it sounds nothing like “Heron and the Fox” but it’s every bit as compelling. It’s got this great loose-limbed rhythm to it that’s punctuated by a stuttering guitar and Sprengelmeyer’s silky, lush voice. Add to that the bells and whistles provided by producer Richard Reed Parry (Arcade Fire) and you have a pretty damn cool pop song.
I was curious as to what The Golden Record was going to sound like when I first heard Little Scream, but after hearing “Cannons” I was willing to line Steve Jobs’ pockets with a few more ducats in order to hear the record now. I’ll give you my full review at a later date, but if you were impressed with Little Scream the first time I posted, and you like this track, you’ll want to get yourself a copy of the record now, too.
