Sleep beneath the willow

When I was a young boy, growing up in Welland, Ontario, there was a local AM radio station (CHOW 1470) that we locals lovingly referred to as “C-HOW”.  It was a country and western station in the truest sense of the word.  C-HOW came around to playing “new country” eventually, but their audience was more inclined to want to hear George Jones over Alabama.  My Dad liked to listen to the station for news and weather; we kids loved listening to C-HOW in the morning to hear whether or not school’s were being closed because of snow.  Some of my fondest memories feature C-HOW as the soundtrack.

Daniel Romano is younger than me, as I was already at university by the time he and his brother started making music in their garage just down the road from where I lived.  Still, when I listen to his new album, Sleep Beneath The Willow, I can imagine the Romano clan gathered around the radio listening to C-HOW, just like my family.  The 11 songs on his second solo album in less than a year are all flecked with that AM country music sensibility: simple storytelling, super songwriting chops, and the heart and soul of a consummate performer.

Sleep Beneath The Willow will be released on You’ve Change Records, the label Romano started with Steve “Baby Eagle” Lambke, on April 4, 2011.  Brace yourself, because I’ll be singing it’s praises from now until it tops every single best-of 2011 list in December.
