The wake

It isn’t all rock ‘n’ roll fantasy, y’know.
The Albertans–Joel Bravo, Ian Everall, Curtis McLean, Krystin Monaghan, and Alison Yip–came together in Vancouver, British Columbia, but are defects from Alberta, Saskatchewan and the U.S. They’ve been on a musical journey for two years that’s seen them travel by propane-fueled short bus to San Diego and back, then cross North America to New York to record and playing shows along the way. They logged tens of thousands of miles, put up with broken down vehicles, and less than stellar sleeping conditions.
But it wasn’t all bad. they recorded an EP and a full length, and played a bunch of festivals and gigs that them noticed (they were named one of L Magazine’s top NYC bands of 2009). This past fall, the band settled back into their adopted hometown of Vancouver, playing shows in BC and getting ready for a new leg of their journey to start as they prep for the release of their second record, New Age, being put out by the Ernest Jenning Record Company on April 19, 2011.
Their sound is a knotty pine of twisting pop hooks and harmonies, dusted with a fine mist of frosty female harmonies. Over all their time on the road together, The Albertans have grown into a solid and sturdy band that effortlessly feeds off of each other musically. If you like your pop to pop and percolate with life and zest, then I recommend checking New Age out when it drops next month.
