Wasn’t that a party?

The Juno Awards celebrate 40 years of Canadian music excellence

I’m not big on awards shows.  I usually find that they’re self-congratulatory slaps-on-our-back  schmooze fests that don’t speak for the common fan, but last night, the 2011 Juno Awards proved how wrong I can be.  If there’s anything that can get me sentimental and weepy, it’s a celebration of Canadian pride, and last night’s 40th anniversary Junos delivered in spades. As a cap off to all the festivities this past week, it was the perfect balance of musical nostalgia and modern times.  I loved that Chilly Gonzales, The Sadies, Neil Young, Jim Cuddy, Greg Keelor, Sarah Harmer, Robbie Roberston, Randy Bachman, bush-lovin’ Shania Twain, and Chromeo could all share time on the same stage.  Where else but in Canada.

I was impressed by all the performances, the highlight of which was the all-star tribute to Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, Gordon Lightfoot and The Band (which, by the way, included my homeboy Daniel Romano playing with The Sadies and City and Colour!!), and loved the lighthearted and celebratory tone set right from the get-go.  There will be countless places where you can go to find out exactly who won statues this weekend, but, as corny as this sounds, it was Canada that came away the big winner, in my opinion.  Congratulations to all the winners and nominees, the performers, and to the night’s MC, Drake, who may not have won an award but won a place in my heart, thank you for showing the country a good time.  That “Old Money” skit was hilarious!
