A golden record
Every once in awhile, I get asked, “How do you write a blog?” and that’s a question I find next to impossible to answer. “You just write it,” is always my pat response, because, well… that just what you do. You have a passion, a desire to share something, and you just go for it. Over and over again. You’ll write some crap, sure, but eventually, you’ll get the hang of it and it will come naturally. I realized last night when I tried helping someone creat a blog for their business that it’s not really something you can teach someone. You can go over the technicalities, but it’s hard to teach someone how to be creative.
I could imagine that Laurel Sprengelmeyer, aka Little Scream gets asked how she comes up with the ideas for her songs, too, and think that it would be just as hard to describe. There’s not a formula to writing and recording a great album that one can simply plug themselves into, and PRESTO! amazing music occurs. Her debut album, The Golden Record, is one of those arresting creations that can’t be explained; it has to be experienced. Whether it’s penning poignant ballads, or turning the traditional pop song on its head, Little Scream’s The Golden Record is the work of a true artist with a distinct and utterly unique vision. If you’ve heard “Heron and the Fox” or “Cannons” already, then you’ll know that you can’t just listen to one song and figure Little Scream out. From the ethereal opener “Amahl” to the thunderous slow-burner “Your Radio”, Sprengelmeyer creates a soundscape that constantly shifts and transforms itself. The anchor that holds the whole thing together is her incredible voice, a gem nestled in the 10 opulent musical settings.
“How did she do this?” Trying to explain or describe it is as pointless an exercise as is trying to explain why we drive on parkways and park on driveways. And really, who cares how she did it, let’s just be thankful that someone had the good sense to let the rest of us hear this.
The Golden Record is out today, April 12, on Outside Music.
