Blurring the lines

New label, new EP, new sounds for Teen Daze

Last week, Vancouver’s  Teen Daze gave ample warning about the release of a new EP, A Silent Planet, scheduled for August 9.  It’s the first on new label Waaga, who are already taking pre-orders for the CD and cassette versions of the EP (click here if you’re interested in buying now).

The EP features six songs, inspired by the novel Out Of The Silent Planet by C.S. Lewis, and borne from musical experimentation.  For those familiar with Teen Daze’s earlier work, you will most definitely hear a change in direction for this new work, one that’s less likely to be pigeonholed by any catchphrase genre.  Using the novel as a guidebook, Teen Daze has created a soundtrack to one’s imagination, a sonic representation of the images cast in his mind while he read.

“Surface” has been marked as free and clear o share with you good people, and it’s because of it’s quiet intensity that I’m really interested in hearing what the rest of the EP will sound like.  I think this will be a pivotal release for Teen Daze, and may see this hotly-tipped harbinger of hipness move beyond just flavour-of-the-month status.
