Bright and vivid
Well, that’s certainly something I wasn’t expecting from Kathryn Calder! The New Pornographer has just announced that she’s returning with her sophomore solo LP, Bright and Vivid, on October 25 (File Under: Music), and in keeping with the album’s title, new song “Who Are You?” is just that: a bright, sunny pop song vividly brought to life with synthesized splashes of colour.
It was just last year that Calder released her debut, Are You My Mother?, and since then, she’s continued to refine and hone her songcraft. There was a lot of attention thrown Calder’s way after that debut, much of it having to do with the fact she wrote the songs while caring for her ill mother. That kind of scrutiny and attention might have forced some people to regress and throw up some defensive walls, but Calder seems to have charged head-first into the musical fray. Bright and Vivid promises to be a treasure-trove unexpected pleasures.
