Caught in the act

Catching up with The Paint Movement

I’m a bit of a mess these day.  I’ve had my house up for sale this summer, and was doing a number of renovation jobs around the place in hopes of making it more appealing to perspective buyers, one of which included cleaning up (i.e. hiding) the stacks and stacks of CDs that have accumulated around here.  So now, while the house looks immaculate (so good that I’m not sure I want to move), I can’t find a lot of the music that I was saving to review this summer, like The Paint Movement.  Their self-titled debut was officially released on August 16 by Nevado Records, and I’m pretty sure there’s a copy in a box, or in a closet, or in a drawer somewhere in this place, when it rightfully should be filed neatly in my CD collection, ripped to my music library, and soundtracking the last paint job I have left to do before going back to work in a couple weeks.

The Paint Movement was produced and mixed by Dave “Broken Social Scene” Newfeld and recorded in an old church converted into a studio out in the middle of Ontario.  A few days at a time, the band made their way out to the studio, laid down some tracks, slowly amassing the entire record.  They chose not to play live at all during the recording sessions, allowing their full focus to be on capturing  the songs as best they could, and that attention to detail has undeniably paid off based on “Young Lights”.

The Paint Movement wrap up a two-date New Brunswick jaunt tomorrow night with a show at The Capitol in Fredericton, and then head home to Ontario for a series of shows ’round here before heading out to B.C. in early November:
