Thousands can’t be wrong

iNTRODUCiNG Kaptur

If you find yourself with a few bucks to burn and a little time to invest in some online record bin diving, I’d like to direct you to the world’s best indie music record store–Bandcamp–to the ‘K’ section, where I gaurantee you’ll be instantly taken with Thousands, the debut from St. Catharines, Ontario’s Kaptur.  At just $4, the five-song EP is a well worth your investment (financially and time-wise), and a portent of great things to come from the band in the future.

Kaptur is the work of one guy, 22 year old Riley Jensen, who wrote, recorded and played all the instruments on Thousands himself.  It is a surprisingly accomplished recording, with details and nuances in the arrangements that are unexpected but fit perfectly (like the syncopated beats of “Millionaire Counting Machine” against its scratchy guitar riffs).  Kaptur’s sound is pitched in the same ballpark as Death Cab For Cutie’s emotive indie rock, flexible enough to stand as acoustic numbers when it’s just Jansen playing them solo (as he sometimes does).  Thousands is the fourth release for fledgling St. Catharines label Indoor Shoes.  The EP was produced by Josh Korody (of label-mates Elk) and available as a digital download from Bandcamp now.
