For your own sake

Have I told you lately how great the music scene in Niagara is?  Because it’s bloody amazing, and I’d highly recommend the rest of Canada start taking notice soon.

With thanks to the intrepid efforts of St. Catharines-based label/promotoers IndoorShoes, there’s now another stop along the QEW south of Hamilton for bands looking to connect with audiences.  Next week, IndoorShoes will be presenting Bruce Peninsula and The Weather Station, but tomorrow night, they’re hosting The Wooden Sky and One Hundred Dollars at The Mansion House in St. Catharines.  Opening the show tomorrow is local duo Howler, who’ll be launching their new EP, For Your Own Sake, at the gig. Brittany Brooks, the voice of Howler,  plays guitar and banjo and Nick Arseneau mans the upright bass and drums, and though the pair have only been working together for a little over a year, they’ve already developed a solid and focused sound. Their seemingly simple folk songs are anything but; ornate and seductive arrangements provide the prefect showcase for Brooks’ sexy and sweet voice.

Tonight’s show at the Mansion House kicks off at 7:00 p.m., tickets are $8 (only 8 bucks!!) and available at the door, or the gate, or wherever they’ll be taking tickets, ’cause the gig’s supposed to be an outdoor affair in their parking lot (part of the Niagara Wine Festival festivities me thinks).  The 3-song sampler of great things to come is the latest release from IndoorShoes, and you can head over to the band’s Bandcamp page to hear the whole thing now.
