Their will

QBiM SPiNS Elliott BROOD, Days Into Years

War sucks.  It’s also fuel for inspiration, as is the case with Elliott BROOD, who took a five-day, back road journey from Amsterdam to Barcelona back in 2007.  Traveling through Belgium and France, the band stopped in charming little villages off the beaten path, visited historical battlefields and cemeteries, arriving early one morning at Juno Beach.  It wasn’t until after the band had returned to the hustle and bustle of civilization that they began to discuss the impact their side trip had, and came to the realization that one day they would write an album about the experience.

That day has come to pass, and today, Days Into Years, passes from their hands into ours.  Those familiar with the folk-punk-stomp of previous ‘BROOD tracks like “Write It All Down For You” (from 2008′s  Mountain Meadows) will find the band taking an more introspective approach to the new songs; Muted, yes, but not neutered.  If anything, there’s more sound on Days Into Years, fewer empty spaces within the songs themselves.  A track like “Hold You” powers forward almost of its own volition, as if the band are just mere conduits for the stories of spirits from the past.  The songs just have so much to hold, they’re almost overflowing.

It’s a bold and brave artistic statement, and Elliott BROOD handle their subject matter with reverence, grace, and an objectivity that makes Days Into Years more than just a history lesson; it’s a human history lesson.  The emotions and conflicts–internal struggles with the reality of war as well as the physical battles–are embedded deep within the grooves of this record.  In the tradition of Gordon Lightfoot, Rheostatics, and The Tragically Hip, Elliott BROOD have carved out their own niche as songwriters who explore the Canadian perspective.

Days Into Years is available today, September 27, 2011, on Paper Bar Records.  Quick Before It Melts is pleased to announce that we are partnering with Paper Bag Records to bring you exclusive content from their roster.  Come back tomorrow for more news on Elliott BROOD.
