Drop Anchors (again)
Maybe you missed it earlier this year in the deluge of music that came out in March and April, but Kalle Mattson‘s sophomore LP, Anchors, has become one of my go-to records of 2011. The young band from Sault Ste. Marie that started out as a solo project for songwriter Kalle Wainio has developed some very impressive chops in the two years since their debut, Whisper Bee, was first released, and things just keep getting better and better.
Yesterday, Parliament of Trees (who signed Kalle Mattson to their label a few months back) re-released Anchors, hopefully garnering the album some much-deserved extra attention. Regardless of whether you’ve heard that record or not, the re-release also comes with a special digital version of Kalle Mattson’s new split 7″ single, which will be available as a physical release in January. Both “The Shore” and “Palm Sunday” are further examples of Wainio’s blossoming songwriting skills. “Palm Sunday” revisit the punk rock snarl they let loose on Whisper Bee‘s last track “Bomb Threat Blues”, proving that the band aren’t letting themselves be strangled indie-pop/alt.country genre they’ve already mastered. The songs on this single are thick with bass, muscle, attitude, and a healthy dose of aggression. A surprising recipe from Kalle Mattson, for sure, but the result is most certainly a tasty treat.
“The Shore/Palm Sunday” is available now via Kalle Mattson’s Bandcamp page.
