Trouble soon will be over
Some days I feel like I’m surrounded by people whose sole pleasure in life is complaining about how much shit they have to put up with. They have to love bitching about how bad they have it considering how much time they spend doing that each day. Or maybe it’s an addiction, a defense mechanism that hides just how little confidence they have in themselves. Lord knows I’m not the most optimistic person in the world, by cripes, enough with the bloody negativity already!
Matt Bahen of The Schomberg Fair has a right to complain if he so chooses. Bahen’s gone through some pretty dark patches, having spent time living on the streets, as well temporarily losing three fingers in a construction accident. His perseverance, and unwillingness to give into the darkness eventually led to him becoming an accomplished musician with the Toronto-based trio, as well as a respected visual artist and outreach worker with the very community he used to belong to. It’s that spirit of survival–saving yourself from your own inner darkness–and the hope of a brighter future that pervades The Schomberg Fair’s new EP, Mercy. It is a stark, emotionally naked record that still manages to be buoyant in spirit.
The Schomberg Fair has been out road-testing the five songs from Mercy as part of their high-energy live show since the start of the month, and have a string of upcoming dates across Ontario, Nova Scotia and New Brunswick in the coming weeks:
November 25: Windsor, ON – Phog Lounge
November 26: London, ON – Call The Office
November 27: Oshawa, ON – The Atria
November 30: Halifax, NS – Gus’ Pub
December 01: Moncton, NB – Plan B
December 02: Fredericton, NB – The Capitol
December 03: Saint John, NB – Pepper’s Pub
