Modern, normal

LiSTEN: Memoryhouse "The Kids Were Wrong"

(Vanessa Heins)

I just did a quick search through the QBiM archives (have you ever been?) to see when I first and last posted about Guelph duo Memoryhouse, and am shocked that in both cases, it was 2010.  The buzz building pair of Evan Abeele and Denise Nouvion have really ramped things up for themselves since then: their EP The Years garnered them even more attention and praise before it was re-released by Sub Pop Records, who signed the band earlier this year.  Anticipation and expectation has been growing around their full length debut, which is now scheduled to drop on February 28, 2012.

The Sideshow Effect is said to be a 10-song album showcasing Memoryhouse’s transformation  “from a ‘bedroom recording project’ into a fully realized band”.  I’ve not yet had the pleasure of hearing it for myself, but after taking a listen to the LP’s lead single, “The Kids Were Wrong”, I think it’s safe to say the above pronouncement is very right.  The haziness and fog of their early work has lifted, and the sun is glinting off the polished melodies and blinding my eyes.  Memoryhouse have not been sitting on their laurels, making The Sideshow Effect my first highly anticipated new record of 2012.
