November in Ontario

And so here it comes: the sudden onslaught of seasonal selections from artists vying for that coveted Christmas #1. Less than a day into December and already my inbox is stuffed fuller than a stocking on the morning of the 25th.
The difference between all the rest and Skydiggers‘ latest offering is that “November in Ontario” is actually quite good. Emotive and moving, it’s not like anything I would have expected from Skydiggers, which goes to show just how out-of-touch with the band I’ve been. “November in Ontario” is originally from their 1997 album, Desmond’s Hip City. This new version, recorded at the Tragically Hips’ Bathouse Studio, echoes the blustering winds that signal winter’s early approach, and carries with it the unease one feel’s about the season yet to come.
Not exactly the kind of soundtrack one needs for an early December day with bursts of sun, but Skydiggers are gearing up for their annual hometown Christmas shows at The Horseshoe Tavern in Toronto (set for December 16 and 17),so if this gets them, in the mood, then so be it. The band are also prepping new material for a 2012 LP release.
