Jake’s version of paradise
Is life really better at the beach? My sister and brother-in-law have a cottage on Lake Erie close enough to make escape mid-week possible, but isolated enough to be able to cut yourself off from the real world when you need to. Any way, last week, she sent me some pictures of their break wall, or I should say, what used to be their break wall, as a good three feet of it has slid down the embankment towards the lake, leaving one expensive mess that needs to be repaired come the spring.
Maybe over on Lake Huron, beach life is all hunky dory. You’d certainly get that impression from listening to Amity Beach‘s music. These young lads from Grand Bend, Ontario, have taken their hometown’s summertime vibe and infused it into the quirky indie pop songs of their debut EP. It’s a superb little debut, definitely polished and well produced. If “Barter and Fireworks” was a baby, you’d want to pinch it’s cheeks and coo all over it (I also think it namechecks Jian Ghomeshi so that makes it doubly alright in my book). Shame it’s only three songs long, but there’s enough party vibe and summer solstice soul to help melt away the winter blues. If you’re having a party this weekend (it’s far enough removed from the holidays to start eating and drinking again, isn’t it?) these songs need to be part of your playlist. You can add them easily by heading to Amity Beach’s Bandcamp page, where their self-titled EP is available as a pay-what-you-want download.
