A song is a weapon
I get to start a new job in September. I’m not changing organizations or making a shift in departments, but the new assignment will offer me enough new challenges and experiences while allowing me to use some of the expertise and knowledge I’ve gained while in my current position. What does this have to do with new music from Stars? I admit it’s a stretch but bear with me.
“The Theory of Relativity” is like my new job. It’s not a radical departure from where Stars were before, but they sound like they’re in a new place, sensing in themselves the need for a fresh start. It’s heavier on synths than anything from The Five Ghosts, but the signature interplay between Torquil Campbell and Amy Millan is intact, along with the sorrowful tenor of the lyrics. It’s taken me only a couple of listens to rediscover all the things I loved about Stars before.
The North is scheduled for release on September 4 on Stars’ own Soft Revolution Records. “The Theory of Relativity” is available as a free download from starsthenorth.com now.
