Fifty fifty

NEW MUSiC: The Luyas

(Richmond Lam)

I was a little lukewarm with The Luyas after hearing their last LP, Too Beautiful To Work, even though I was very much enamoured with the album’s lead single, “Tiny Head”.  After hearing their new track “Fifty Fifty”, I’ve got higher hopes for album three.  It’s a bewitching bitch of a tune.  The rippling synths and stuttering drums are blanketed by Jessie Stein’s silky voice, who laments that “dreams die, dreams die,” while the songs builds and soars upwards towards heaven in an attempt to pull those dreams back down to Earth.

The new album, Animator, was produced by band member Pietro Amato, mixed by Jace Lasek (of The Besnard Lakes) and is out on October 16 on Paper Bag Records.  The label is celebrating their 10th anniversary with a three-night concert series at Toronto’s Great Hall from September 27 – 29.  The Luyas are appearing on the final night alongside new label mates Young Galaxy, You Say Party, and an as yet unnamed secret guest.  Who could it be?  Well, given that Austra is the most glaring omission from the label’s roster not yet announced for the three nights, my money is on them.
